water rafting is one of the longest
established adventure sports, with
rivers offering the average enthusiast
a few thrills along with glorious
scenery and the chance to view village
life en route. For the serious professional
kayaker, there are some extremely
challenging rivers which can be run
when the weather conditions offer
a window of opportunity. The most
popular area for rafting is along
the Kelani river in Kitulgala, near
where the classic film, Bridge on
the River Kwai, was shot. An easy
day trip from Colombo, this expedition
offers excitement for the novice as
well as a change for the experienced
rafter to absorb the beauty of the
countryside and ride a few rapid on
the way. It is also possible to explore
the country’s many rivers, calm
lagoons and irrigation lakes by kayak
or canoe.
