One of the most rewarding hikes for the seasoned traveler is the Alagalla Mountain Range. Bordering the Central and Sabaragamuwa provinces of the country, the mountain range is famous for its historic significance, panoramic views and the adventurous hike.
The Alagalla mountain range gets its name from the potato shaped rock found at the peak. The 3740 ft. high summit overlooks the surrounding mountains (including Bible Rock, Knuckles Mountain Range) and presents a breathtaking image, leaving the viewer awed and satisfied.
Significance of the Mountain Range
History records that the Balana Fort built between the Kadugannawa Pass and Alagalla mountain range was the famous battle ground for many of the invasions against the Kingdom of Kandy. The mountain range itself has played an important part in protecting Buddhism and Sinhalese culture for nearly five centuries from 1505 to 1948 against the Portuguese, Dutch and British invasions.
Tips for hiking
• It is always best to travel in groups. The hike could be challenging, so having someone else to watch out for you and vise versa is best.
• Avoid the Alagalla Mountain during the rainy season from May – June and October – November.
• Only climb the mountain if you’re physically fit and an expert hiker. Be sure to wear walking boots, waterproof jacket and hiking rope just in case.
• Nature comes with its downsides. Alagalla, especially after a rain, is filled with leeches. So make sure to take all necessary precautions.
• Take plenty of water, and light snacks. Don’t carry heavy backpacks.
• Be prepared for tricky weather.
