Bentota

Located in the southwestern coastal belt of the island, Bentota with its pristine sand and wide blue ocean is one of the most visited and popular beaches in Sri Lanka. Famous for its watersports during the October to April season, Bentota offers a wide range of activities from swimming, body surfing and diving to jet skiing, wind surfing and parasailing.

The Bentota beach is a well-known and beautiful location to hold romantic weddings for both locals and foreigners. With fine beach resorts and affordable guest houses to suit any budget, Bentota is also a popular destination for honeymooners and holiday-making tourists.

If you ever get tired of spending a leisure day at the beach, a safari on the Bentota River and lagoon is an amazing getaway. The two hour boat ride on the Maadu River includes the visit of an ancient temple and the cinnamon island. Tourists are also able to indulge in the tranquility of the narrow channels, mangrove swamps and enjoy a foot therapy at the fish farms beside the river.

The turtle hatchery, located 3km away from the Bentota Bridge, is a sea turtle project established to protect the rapidly declining numbers of marine turtles in Sri Lankan shores. The hatchery has become a main tourist attraction as visitors are allowed to hold the turtles and watch as the baby turtles are released to the sea.
