With a population close to one million, Colombo is by far the most developed and largest city in the country. Known to be the political and commercial hub of Sri Lanka, Colombo makes for an excellent start – or finish for a tour, and still lives up to its 19th century “garden city of the east” moniker. With shady boulevards throughout the city, Colombo is the perfect place to spend your day sightseeing, shopping, exploring the street markets and museums or visiting famous religious places of worship.
Given to the natural harbor at the mouth of the Kelani River, the ocean city found at the west coast of the island has been a focal point for many centuries for various traders and conquerors. The city today is a sight on its own with a blended mixture of both colonial and modern architecture and plays an important role in almost every financial and economic activity in the country. The cosmopolitan side of the city has led to the opening of a cluster of posh hotels, stylish eateries and galleries, charming shops and comfortable cafes that often compel the visitors to indulge in a little bit of spontaneous spending. The large city has also developed itself an exciting nightlife of clubbing, dining and casinos that’s often reserved for the high-end customer.
Despite of the Sri Lankan traffic and noisy bustle that often takeover the city, Colombo with its towering buildings and incredible cultural diversity has fast become one of Sri Lanka’s finest and most beautiful cities.
