As one of the oldest zoological gardens in Asia, the Dehiwala National Zoo has an extensive collection of both indigenous and exotic animal and birdlife. Opened in the early years of the 20th Century, the zoo was at first more focused on entertainment and satisfying public curiosity rather than conservation. However, over the years, the Dehiwala Zoo has become a pioneer of the open zoo concept in Asia, and has been realized as a tool for scientific research. Today the zoo also supports the breeding and conservation of rare and endangered species.
More commonly known as the Colombo Zoo around the world, The National Zoological Gardens of Sri Lanka opens daily from 8.00 am to 6.00 pm and is usually full of excited children and adults visiting to see the many elephants, snakes, birds, lions, monkeys, giraffes and all the other animals. The zoo currently houses a varying number of 2500 – 3000 animals, and among them are the Sri Lankan sloth bears, porcupines, lots of birds, giant red kangaroos, rabbits and a number of leopards. The Dehiwala Zoo is also equipped with an aquarium and two mini parks for the many birds and butterflies and have been built in such a way as to give the species a greener, more natural environment.
Walking around and exploring the eleven acres of the zoo isn’t overly exhausting. With a number of kiosks selling refreshments and treats like achcharu, ice cream and candy floss, one can sit and relax on the park benches stationed at shady spots or catch one of the delightful shows the zoo offers.
