Diyaluma Waterfall

August 19, 2019

For a small Island in the Indian Ocean, Sri Lanka offers plenty of interesting things to do. Hiking to the top of the second highest waterfall in the country is one of them. With epic views throughout the exhilaratingly satisfying hike and cool natural ponds to swim on top of the 220-meter fall, Diyaluma is a paradise for the adventurous traveler.

Like most attractions in Sri Lanka, Diyaluma waterfall is steeped in folklores. One of the more popular legends is about a king who fell in love with a lower caste maiden. Opposed by his people, they decided to flee and on their way had to climb up the fall. As the beautifully tragic tale goes, even though the king reached the top, his maiden fell to her death. It is said the king’s tears collected and the Diyaluma waterfall was made.

How to get there?

Located just one hour away from Ella, the foot of the waterfall can be reached quite easily. From here you can get a splendid view of the Diyaluma Falls and even take a leisurely swim at the base. However, to reach the top of the falls, you need to find the small unmarked road by the rubber factory. It is best to have a local guide with you as the roads are easy to miss. A slow drive up through the rubber trees will bring you to the Koslanda Village and from here the hiking trail begins.

What to know before hiking the falls?
● Take plenty of water and food as the hike usually takes close to 50 minutes.
● Avoid hiking the falls during the October and November rainy reason, and always check the weather forecast a day before.
● Look out for the wild elephants active in the area. It is best to travel in groups.
● Ask directions from the villagers. They’ll be happy to help and for a small tip will be your local guide.
