In the recent years Sri Lanka has become increasingly popular for dolphin and whale watching excursions. Being situated within the zone of the Bay of Bengal and the Indian Ocean; where 26 out of the 80 known whale species are found, Sri Lanka has become the ideal place to indulge in this thrilling, yet humbling activity. While you can embark on these expeditions during the morning and afternoon, the perfect time to spot these majestic creatures are in the morning.
Here are the best places in Sri Lanka for dolphin and whale watching.
Dondra Point
Easily accessible from Galle, Hikkaduwa and Mirissa; the deep southern waters beyond Dondra Point are confirmed to be the best in the world for spotting blue and sperm whales. Being the natural habitat to one of the only recorded blue whale colonies, Dondra point and Mirissa also have the longest whale watching seasons than anywhere else, from December to April.
Kalpitiya
Having more dolphins than whales, Kalpitiya is the perfect spot for dolphin watching excursions in Sri Lanka. Without having to go too deep into the ocean, Kalpitiya gives a whole new experience of beautiful dolphins putting on a playful show; leaping and swimming along the boats. With the tours usually starting at first light and lasting for 2-3 hours, the dolphin season in Kalpitiya lasts from November to April.
