Surrounded by hills covered in cloud forests and tea plantations, Haputale is another of Sri Lanka’s spectacular towns, with a cool climate and rich biodiversity. Approximately 193km away from Colombo, the town is located 4695 ft. high above sea level in the Badulla district and clings to a narrow mountain ridge. Though small and busy with the local hubbub, Haputale town has a charm of its own, allowing beautiful views of the Southern Plains and offering plenty of things to do. On a clear day, when the mist lifts up, you can plainly see the south coast and at night the Hambantota Lighthouse.
Things to see and do in Haputale –
Visit Tea Estates – Ceylon tea is definitely one of the best things about Sri Lanka, and Haputale is a haven for tea lovers! With beautiful tea plantations that stretch up to thousands of acres, the town is the best place for a tea estate tour. The “Dambatenne Tea Factory” which was built by Sir Thomas Lipton is one of the most popular and is open for visitors.
Hiking and trekking – with its cool climate and favorable atmosphere, Haputale is one of the greatest places for a hiking adventure in Sri Lanka. The town is also the starting point of some of the best sites to see in the island. Among them are the Horton Plains and the Bambarakanda Waterfall and trekking through Ohiya, a rural village located an hour away from Haputale, is almost certainly the most scenic route to take.
Adisham's Bungalow – visiting Adisham’s Bungalow is probably one of the best known activities to do in Haputale. Influenced by post Victorian architecture, the magnificent mansion was built by a Kentish gentleman and is today one of the few remnants of the British Colonization.
