Intriguing Jaffna

December 20, 2018

Home to Sri Lankan Tamil culture, Jaffna is one of the most rewarding places to visit in Sri Lanka. From the imposing Hindu temples to the stretches of scenic coastline, Jaffna offers many interesting places for curious travelers.

Following are some of the most intriguing places in Jaffna:

Jaffna Fort

Built using cut blocks of coral that can be clearly seen in the blocks; the Jaffna fort is the second largest Dutch fort in Sri Lanka. The southern side of the fort is bounded by the shallow waters of the Jaffna lagoon and the interior of the fort gives to a large expanse of grass. Even with grim reminders of the war, the Jaffna fort is truly a beautiful sight.

Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil

This Hindu temple is a magnificent site with its South Indian architecture and multitude of colours. The Nallur Kovil is one of the most significant Hindu religious complexes in Sri Lanka, and every year, 26 days before the August new moon, the kovil holds the most important festival of Jaffna peninsula, where the deity of the Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil makes a vibrant procession along the roads surrounding the temple.

Keeramalai Pond

The sacred pond of Keeramalai is one of the religious sites of Hindu devotees. The pond, despite being on the beach, is fed by an ancient freshwater spring and is believed to have healing powers. The surrounding compound of the Keeramalai Pond offers a spectacular view of the Palk Strait and the scenery of the Northern Coast.

Nilavarai

Interwoven with the Indian Hindu Epic Ramayana, Nilavarai is a beautiful natural well with blue-green waters. According to legend Lord Rama shot an arrow into the ground with the hopes of quenching his thirst, and a never ending supply of freshwater came to be. The well was believed to be bottomless until recently, and the salt water found in its depth, attests to its connection with the sea.

Casuarina Beach

This pristine coastline can be reached at the Karainagar Island, roughly a forty-five minute drive from the Jaffna town. The beach which takes its name after the Casuarina trees that fringe it, is a popular spot for locals and holidaymaking foreigners to relax and unwind.
