Kataragama

December 06, 2019

Recognized throughout the island for its religious significance and cultural value, Kataragama is considered to be one of the holiest places in Sri Lanka where Hindu, Buddhist and Muslim devotees visit on religious pilgrimage. Located 19km inland from Tissamaharama, the small town dates as far back as the 2nd century BC and is rich in a history that is both intriguing and appealing. In addition to having Kiri Vehera – a first century BC Buddhist Dagoba, Kataragama also has an Islamic mosque within its temple complex. However, the importance of Kataragama lies with the Hindu Mahadewala complex where the Kataragama Deviyo, a Hindu war god, is venerated and revered by all three religions.

Believed to have been built by the Sinhalese warrior king Dutugemunu, the shrine of Kataragama god is believed to bring blessings and lessen bad fate. According to some legends, Kataragama is also the place where Lord Buddha met with King Mahasena (580 BC) on his third and the last visit to Sri Lanka. The most vibrant and important event held in Kataragama is the annual Hindu festival where a two week long Perahera is held in celebration of Kataragama Deviyo during the months of July and August. With hundreds of devotees and pilgrims frequenting the small town from as far as Jaffna, Kataragama is definitely an interesting place to visit, with its streets always busy and lined with colorful kiosks and stalls selling garlands, fruit platters and sweets.
