Dating back to the early 1600’s the Old Colombo Dutch Hospital served as a top-end hospice for the soldiers and personnel of the then Dutch East India Company. Today the beautiful colonial era building is one of the oldest structures in Colombo, and has been refurbished into its original glory making it one of the must visit shopping precincts in the country. With charming colonnades, low slung tiled roofs and widespread wooden doors and windows, the Dutch Hospital Shopping Precinct has the relaxing ambience of a long ago era. This, along with the stylish restaurants, bars and shopping outlets never fail to attract the crowds throughout the week.
Located in close proximity to most of the hotels in Colombo, the Dutch Hospital is probably the most ideal place to unwind, catch up with friends or spend a satisfyingly long day shopping and helping yourself to some delicious meals. Having everything Sri Lankan and then some, the shopping arcade is especially popular after dusk for its lively atmosphere. With jazzy music and bright lights, the friendly aura at the Hospital courtyard gives a unique experience and something for everyone to enjoy. The Hospital Street behind the Dutch Hospital is also one of the most inviting streets in the city and is well worth a visit.
