The 9 arch bridge

December 13, 2018

If you are planning to visit Sri Lanka and love hiking, then Ella should definitely be on your bucket list. Being a major tourist spot in Sri Lanka, Ella offers breathtaking views and great hikes for tourists.

The nine arch bridge, located between Ella and Demodara stations is one of the most unique attractions in Sri Lanka. The bridge with its beautiful nine arches, was built purely out of stone bricks and cement. It is believed that during the construction of the bridge, the First World War broke out, stealing with it all the steel needed to build the bridge for military use. Today the nine arch bridge boasts of being one of the best examples of colonial-era railway construction.

The Kandy to Ella train ride is famous among both local and foreign tourists for being one of the most beautiful train rides in the world. As the train passes over the bridge, passengers are exposed to a splendid view of Sri Lanka’s lush scenery.

For hikers that are looking forward to a first hand experience, then a 20 minute walk brings you right to the bridge, where you can access it from either side of the railway. As the trains pass by only several times a day, it is possible to enjoy long, relaxing walks along the bridge and bask in the beauty and serenity of the nature. Many tourists opt to stand by and wave as the trains pass by, giving into the bliss of the Sri Lankan railway experience. If you’re not up for the 20 minute hike through the jungle, a tuk-tuk will take you right up to the bridge for a very small fee.

The bridge is often called the Bridge in the Sky. This is because of the iconic view of the sky that can be seen through the arches when standing under the bridge. This is one of the reasons that the nine arch bridge has become a favorite spot for photography lovers, wanting to capture the perfect shot.
The best times to arrive would be during the sunrise or the sunset to get the best lightning and to avoid crowds. Moreover, as there are no charges for those visiting, photographers are able to click to their hearts’ content.
